WHO IT IS FOR

Adults wanting a clearer understanding of how they think and learn

Including students and those exploring possible specific learning differences.

WHAT YOU RECEIVE

A detailed diagnostic report with practical recommendations

Helping you understand your cognitive and learning profile, including strengths, areas that may take more effort and what may help in practice.

USEFUL FOR

Work, study and reasonable adjustments

Including DSA evidence and exam access arrangements where relevant criteria are met.

WHO IS THIS FOR?

When Might a Cognitive SpLD Assessment Be Useful?

You do not need to know whether dyslexia or another specific learning difference is relevant before getting in touch. The assessment is designed to explore your wider cognitive and learning profile and make sense of the patterns you experience.

Reading, writing & numbers

Reading, written work or working with numerical information may take more conscious effort.

Memory & processing

You may notice differences in remembering information, processing it quickly or following several steps at once.

Organisation & workload

Planning, sequencing, managing competing demands or keeping track of information may require more effort.

Study, work & everyday life

You may want to understand why some demands feel easier than others and which strategies or support may suit you.

WHAT DOES THE ASSESSMENT EXPLORE?

Building a Picture of How You Think & Learn

The assessment looks across different aspects of cognitive processing and learning to understand the pattern as a whole, rather than relying on one score or one area of performance.

COGNITIVE PROFILE

How you process information

Reasoning How you understand, organise and work with different types of information.
Working memory Holding and working with information in mind while completing a task.
Processing speed How efficiently you work with straightforward visual information.
Patterns of strengths How different areas compare and what that may mean in everyday life.
LEARNING & ATTAINMENT

How this connects to learning

Reading & literacy Areas such as reading accuracy, fluency, spelling and written language where relevant.
Phonological processing How sounds within spoken language are recognised, remembered and worked with.
Numeracy Number and calculation skills can be explored where this forms part of the referral question.
Functional impact How the pattern relates to study, work and everyday demands.
The assessment is tailored to the individual.

Not every measure is needed for every person. The assessment is shaped around your background, the questions you want answered and any areas that become relevant as the picture develops.

WHAT HAPPENS?

From First Enquiry to Your Report

The assessment is designed to build the picture gradually, starting with your background and the questions you would like the assessment to help answer.

1

Before the assessment

You provide background information about your learning, education, work or study history and the areas you would particularly like to understand.

2

Your assessment

We work through a range of cognitive and learning tasks selected to explore your individual profile. The session is approximately three hours, with breaks where needed.

3

Your profile

The results are considered together with your background and experiences to understand the overall pattern, rather than looking at individual scores in isolation.

4

Your report

You receive a detailed written report within 10 working days, explaining your cognitive and learning profile, conclusions and practical recommendations.

WHAT YOU RECEIVE

More Than a Set of Scores

Your report brings the different parts of the assessment together so you can understand what the findings mean for you in everyday life, study and work.

YOUR PROFILE

A clearer understanding of how you think and learn

Your report explains your cognitive and learning profile, including areas of strength, areas that may take more effort and how the different findings fit together.

CONCLUSIONS

Clear diagnostic conclusions

Where the evidence supports it, the report will identify a specific learning difference and explain the evidence behind that conclusion.

PRACTICAL NEXT STEPS

Recommendations that connect to real life

Recommendations are tailored to your profile and may consider study, work, organisation, technology, reasonable adjustments and everyday strategies where relevant.

FULL WRITTEN REPORT Provided within 10 working days

The aim is that you come away with a clearer understanding of your profile, what may explain the patterns you have experienced and what may help going forward.

STUDY, DSA & EXAMS

Assessment That Connects to Study

A Cognitive SpLD Assessment can be particularly useful if you are studying at university, college or on a professional course and want to understand how your cognitive and learning profile may relate to the demands of study.

Where relevant, the report can provide diagnostic evidence and practical recommendations to support discussions around Disabled Students’ Allowance, reasonable adjustments and exam access arrangements.

Disabled Students’ Allowance The report can provide diagnostic evidence for DSA where the relevant requirements are met.
Study support Recommendations may consider reading, writing, note-taking, organisation, revision and assistive technology.
Reasonable adjustments Findings can help inform conversations about practical support in education or professional training.
Exam access arrangements The assessment can provide relevant evidence and recommendations, although arrangements are determined by the education or training provider under their current requirements.
USEFUL TO KNOW

You do not need to be at university

This assessment can also be relevant for college students, apprentices, professional qualifications and other forms of adult study or training.

If your main reason for assessment is support with study or exams, let us know when you enquire so this can be considered when planning the assessment.

SCOPE & DIAGNOSIS

What Can This Assessment Identify?

The assessment brings together your cognitive profile, learning history, current experiences and performance across relevant tasks to understand whether the overall pattern is consistent with a specific learning difference.

CAN IDENTIFY

Specific learning differences

Where the evidence supports it, the assessment can provide a formal diagnosis of a specific learning difference such as dyslexia.

Areas associated with dyscalculia, dyspraxia or dysgraphia can also be explored where relevant to the referral question.

BROADER UNDERSTANDING

Your wider cognitive and learning profile

Even where a formal diagnosis is not indicated, the assessment can still provide a detailed understanding of how you process information, where your strengths lie and which areas may require more effort.

NOT INCLUDED

ADHD & autism diagnosis

This assessment does not provide a formal diagnosis of ADHD or autism. If your experiences suggest that broader neurodivergent factors may be relevant, this can be discussed and an appropriate next step can be recommended.
