Understand What Helps Your Child Learn
A practical consultation for families who want to understand how their child approaches learning, what may be making things harder and what could help, without moving straight to a full diagnostic assessment.
We bring together the young person’s strengths, experiences, learning demands and wider context to create a clear, practical profile that can be used at home and in education.

Consultation and psychological formulation rather than psychometric assessment.
Children, young people & families
Where there are questions about learning, organisation, study or educational demands but formal diagnosis is not currently needed.
Parent-led, with flexible young person involvement
The young person can be involved where useful and appropriate. School information can also be considered.
A practical written profile
Bringing together strengths, barriers, useful strategies and practical next steps.
When You Need Understanding Before Diagnosis
Sometimes the immediate question is not “What diagnosis does my child have?” but “What is happening with their learning, and what can we do differently?”
Learning feels harder than expected
Your child may understand ideas well but find particular aspects of learning, study or independent work much harder to manage.
Strategies are not quite working
You may already have tried different approaches but want help understanding why some work better than others.
There are several competing demands
Organisation, homework, revision, transitions, independence or workload may all be interacting.
You want practical guidance now
You may not need or want formal diagnostic testing but would still benefit from a psychologist-led understanding and clear next steps.
Looking at the Wider Learning Picture
The consultation is shaped around the young person rather than a fixed checklist. We explore the areas that are most relevant to their current situation.
How they approach learning
What seems to help information make sense, where learning becomes effortful and which approaches appear to suit them best.
Managing tasks & workload
Planning, getting started, remembering instructions, managing homework and keeping track of competing demands.
Revision & independent learning
Developing approaches to revision, studying and independent work that fit how the young person learns.
Preparing for changing demands
Supporting moves between year groups, schools, college, university or other stages where greater independence may be expected.
Understanding First, Strategies Second
Background information
We gather information about the young person’s learning history, strengths, current demands and the areas you would like help with.
Consultation
An approximately 90-minute consultation explores what is happening now and the patterns that may sit underneath the difficulties.
Young person & school input
The young person can be involved where helpful, and relevant school information can be considered where available.
Your Learning Profile
You receive a concise written profile explaining the key themes, practical strategies and suggested next steps.
A Practical Profile You Can Actually Use
The focus is on making sense of what is happening and identifying practical approaches that fit the young person, rather than producing a lengthy diagnostic report.
What already works
A clearer picture of the young person’s strengths, preferences and the conditions that appear to support learning.
What may be getting in the way
The main patterns or demands that appear to be creating additional effort or difficulty.
What to try next
Practical approaches for learning, study, organisation, revision, transitions or other relevant areas.

Before You Book
Is this a diagnostic assessment?
No. A Learning Profile does not use formal psychometric testing and does not provide a diagnosis. It is designed to build a practical understanding of how the young person is learning and what may help.
Does my child need to attend?
Not necessarily. The consultation can be parent-led, with the young person involved where this would be useful and appropriate.
Can school information be included?
Yes. Relevant information from school can be considered alongside the family’s perspective where useful.
What do we receive afterwards?
You receive a concise written Learning Profile bringing together the main themes, strengths, practical strategies and suggested next steps.
What if we later decide we need a formal diagnosis?
If formal testing or diagnostic clarification becomes important, a Cognitive SpLD Assessment can be considered separately.
